SAMe For Individuals With MTHFR Mutation: A Double-edged Sword?
Should I take SAMe If I have an MTHFR Mutation?
If you have an MTHFR mutation and are suffering from Brain fog, anxiety, allergies, low mood. You might be tempted to start taking SAMe. SAMe is made methionine, made itself from Homocysteine combined with B12 and Methyl folate.
Taking SAMe helps fixing very quickly your brain chemistry and dramatically improves allergies and mental clarity.
You may wonder if there is a downside to that and why not taking SAMe on a regular basis.
Yes, it’s a double-edged sword.
When you take SAMe your body starts to sense, of course that you have a good supply of SAMe (which is produced in the methylation cycle). SAMe is used to regulate the function of the MTHFR enzyme, if you have too much SAMe available, your body will slow down the activity the MTHFR enzyme which is the opposite of what we want.
What to do?
My recommendation is to use SAMe for a short duration, 2 to 4 weeks only and also start supporting methylation directly with the right type of B Vitamins and minerals
With SAMe with help our brain chemistry and histamine metabolism but we do not support detoxification, DNA and Cell repair. To fully support Methylation, you need to make sure to consume enough folate in your diet and to take an additional amount of activated form of folate with or without B12 if recommended. Consider taking the other B vitamins (in a B complex form) and consider Minerals as well.
